MIND’s sister organization, IDRAAC, has organized a workshop entitled “Communicating Bad News and Support to Patients and their Families at the End of Life” by Prof. Jane Hinshaw and Prof. Daniel Hinshaw on February 19, 2016.

Prof. Daniel Hinshaw is a professor of surgery at the University of Michigan School of Medicine as well as the founding director of the Palliative Care Consultation Service at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Committee on Surgical Palliative Care of the American College of Surgeons. In addition to more than eighty papers published in scientific journals and in volumes of collected works, he is the author of Suffering and the Nature of Healing, which was published in 2013 by St. Vladimir’s Seminary Press.

Prof. Jane Carnahan Hinshaw is a psychiatrist with thirty years’ experience treating military veterans. During her career at the US Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, she developed an early interest and extensive clinical expertise in addressing the psychiatric and psychosocial needs of patients with advanced, life-threatening illnesses and served as the psychiatric liaison consultant to the medical center’s HIV/AIDS clinic for more than twenty years. From its inception in 2001, she has also been the psychiatric liaison to the hospital’s palliative medicine clinic. In her educational role as a clinical instructor within the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan, she has taught undergraduates, medical students, psychiatry residents, and palliative medicine fellows.

The workshop took place at Crowne Plaza Hotel Hamra and was attended by 45 professionals who deal with patients at the end of their lives. All attendees agreed on the importance of the workshop and the information shared. If you would like to know more about the subject, please contact us.
